* * * * *

As soon as we were safely back in warp, Rex turned on me.

“What the hell have you done, Jane? How could you leave him behind?”

“She had to,” said Tarak, giving voice to my thoughts as I struggled to gather them. “The mission demanded it.”

“That’s nonsense. Sam—”

“Can take care of himself,” I said, my voice cracking. “He has the supplies, he has the ammunition, and he already knows the terrain.”

“Besides, it’s what he would have wanted,” said Imutab as she stepped into the cockpit doorway.

Rex frowned. “What, you can read thoughts now?”

She ignored him and began to rub my back, offering what comfort she could. It was only then that I began to cry.

“It’s okay,” Imutab said softly. “You’re right, Jane. Sam knows how to take care of himself. And if it’s any comfort, the Immortals are in no shape to hunt him down. He’ll find his way.”

“But he’s on the other side of the galaxy,” I sobbed.

To that, no one had any answer.

“What did you see?” Tarak asked Imutab. She said nothing, but simply looked at him. From the deep, guttural grunting sound he made, whatever he saw in Imutab’s mind must have been terrifying.

“The Immortal capital has portals to every jumpgate in the galaxy,” Imutab reassured me. “Not all of them have been destroyed. Sam will find a way back.”

“And what are we supposed to do in the meantime?” Rex asked.

I took a deep breath and buried my head in my hands. It was all too much.

“I don’t know,” I said. “Tarak, take the helm for a while. I need some time alone.”

“I understand.”

“I don’t,” said Rex. “You can’t just walk away from this, Jane. We need to—”

“That’s enough,” Imutab snapped.

It’s rare to see an empath lose their temper. Her severe tone of voice immediately shut my brother up. She guided me to my quarters, transforming into her cat form in the process. I must have still been in a fog, because the next I knew I was alone in my quarters, sitting on the bed, Imutab purring on my lap.

There’s something about petting a small, furry animal that soothes the soul. Imutab knew this, of course, which was why she’d transformed. As much as it helped to pet her, though, I still couldn’t help but feel anguished.

“Did I do the right thing?” I asked, mostly to myself. Imutab answered by licking my hand and nuzzling it with her head.

The real question on my mind, though—the one I dare didn’t ask—was whether I would ever see my dear husband again.
